Meet Our Alpacas!

We have been spending the last few days getting to know our new family members and we thought it was time for some introductions. We’ll update with new pictures and personality factoids as we get them.

Our alpacas are Huayacas- this basically means that their fiber is soft, dense and has a crimp in it.

Say hello to North Starr. Starr is the matriarch of our herd. She was born on June 25th, 2007 on the Spudland Alpaca farm in Blaine, Maine. Her sire was Timo and her DAM was Chase Tavern TKO. She is True Black in color, but we love the personality in her little white tufts.

Meet Maddie! Born on August 2nd 2007, her full name is Katahdin Ridge’s Maddie. Also born at the Spudland Alpaca farm in Blaine, her sire is Katahdin Ridge’s Fenway and her DAM is Lightfoot’s Mona Lisa. She is White in color, and is a New England Coastal Classic’s Color Champion from 2008. Maddie is a very outgoing lady. She is usually the first of the adults to come check us out.

Can’t forget about Cinnamon. She is one of the more outgoing girls we have. Born at the Spudland Alpaca farm on June 7th, 2009. Her Sire is Katahdin Ridge’s Babe Ruth and her DAM is Spudland’s Blossom. She is classified as a Light Fawn color, but to us, her name suits her perfectly.

Next is Miss June. One of our larger girls and is vice-alpaca. She was born on June 3rd, 2011 at Spudland Alpaca farm. Her Sire is Katahdin Ridge’s Babe Ruth and her DAM is Peruvian Hera. She is Beige in color with a 18.1 micron count, which is considered superior fiber. She is the shyest of the adults, by far.

This adorable little guy is known as Big Jim. A gelded male from Spudland Alpaca farms, he was purchased as a companion to Stormie at about a year old. This sweetie is, honestly, one of my faves. I can’t help it- look at those eyes! Those ears! MrGillis and I both agree, Big Jim is the bees knees. He’s usually the first to come and greet us.

Here comes Stormy! He’s a gelded male, born to Maddie on June 10th, 2014. He is the smallest of the alpacas. We love his little floppy top hat emo look. He follows Big Jim and Maddie around and is usually one of the first to say hello.

And last, but not least, is Rosie. She was born to MissJune on June 13th 2014. She’s a little shy, and usually hangs to the back a bit. Just like her mama.

That’s all for now-

Until next time, have a wicked good day!

This is the official website for Gillis Gardens, LLC. Gillis Gardens is a farm, run by myself and my wonderful husband. We believe in biodiversity, organic growing methods and doing things ourselves. I knit, crochet, make jewelry and sew. MrGillis builds, doing everything from our plumbing to our mechanical to our renovations. We are both active members of our little community. We both take care of the plants and animals. He weeds, I harvest. He spreads manure, I plant. We raise multiple breeds of chickens for eggs and meat. We have a herd of Alpacas that we shear every year for their beautiful fiber, which we then have milled into ultra luxurious yarn. We make our own maple syrup, preserves and pickles. We raise bees for honey and herbs for medicine. We also raise pigs for meat and fun. We are the parents of two young children, and consider that our most important job. Follow our adventures here and also on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter.
