Last fall, I wrote a blog about our new and improved garlic patch–
As of today- May 14, 2019
It appears that the store bought (probably Mexican or Chinese in origin) organic garlic did not care for our winter… of the 3 dozen or so cloves MrGillis planted, only half a dozen or so have popped and they are pretty weak looking.
Now, this stuff, the Elephant Garlic given us to by Donna and Wes Lord that they’ve been cultivating in Weston for a few years… Wow! MrGillis thinks every clove sprouted.
So, a huge thank you to the Lords- without you our garlic patch would be a pretty sad garlic wasteland.
This, to us, really is side by side proof, that locally sourced works best in this situation.

Gillis Gardens is a farm, run by myself and my wonderful husband. We believe in biodiversity, organic growing methods and doing things ourselves. I knit, crochet, make jewelry and sew. MrGillis builds, doing everything from our plumbing to our mechanical to our renovations. We are both active members of our little community. We both take care of the plants and animals. He weeds, I harvest. He spreads manure, I plant.
We raise multiple breeds of chickens for eggs and meat. We have a herd of Alpacas that we shear every year for their beautiful fiber, which we then have milled into ultra luxurious yarn. We make our own maple syrup, preserves and pickles. We raise bees for honey and herbs for medicine. We also raise pigs for meat and fun.
We are the parents of two young children, and consider that our most important job.

Gillis Gardens, LLC 
We tried fall planting garlic for the first time at our current homestead and climate last fall. We planted Premium Northern White and Spanish Roja. The White started poking through much earlier than the Roja, but so far they are both looking like they survived our climate and are going to do well.
I am glad you were able to have some of your come up so you are not left with nothing!

Last fall I got some local hardneck garlic from a local festival. I got two plants to sprout from six cloves and both of them are looking great!
